The Meinig School is proud to welcome Omar Emon to our staff. Emon joined the Meinig School in October 2020 as a teaching support specialist. In his role, he supports and enables the masters of engineering (M.Eng.) students and undergraduate seniors in their biomedical engineering (BME) design projects. He also manages the BME Design Complex, providing support and training in various technologies, including 3D printers, CNC machines, and other electronic devices. In addition to these responsibilities, he will develop lab and course materials in consultation with faculty leads.
Hailing originally from Dhaka, Bangladesh, Emon comes to Cornell most recently from the University of Akron (UAkron), Ohio, where in August 2020, he earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. Under the direction of Dr. Jae-Won Choi, Emon did his research in advanced additive manufacturing of soft electronics, and as part of his doctoral work he developed a 3D printing system and materials to fabricate a polymeric pressure sensor. In addition to his research, he was also a course instructor in additive manufacturing, fluid mechanics, and statics courses.
"Omar is a great addition to our group,” says Newton de Faria, professor of practice and director of the Meinig School’s M.Eng. program. “From day one, he has been diligent in preparing and managing our COVID-19 adapted design complex. Besides his valuable academic and technical background, he brings a calm, attentive, and resourceful demeanor, which are important assets when engaging our students and stakeholders.”
Emon says the best lesson he has learned so far in his own career is that perseverance is the key to success. He looks forward to sharing that wisdom this spring while applying his expertise in design, 3D printing, electronics and teaching to helping students finalize their design projects. “I adore the mentoring process,” says Emon.
In his free time, Emon enjoys watching movies and documentaries. In fact, if he were to have a second career it would probably be something to do with film-making. “I love the process of storytelling through film.”
A favorite quote that helps inspire Emon in work and life is “Question everything, before you agree.”
